My owner was looking for help in finding homes for our found kitties and found momma cat. So she headed off to the local petstore where she knew a Local Animal Rescue Group would be (this is where we got Clarise) and she knew.. or thought she knew..that they really cared about the animals safety and well being.
The agreed to help, but since they didn't have room, they asked if she would mind fostering them. She of course agreed, the kittens are after all SOOOO CUTE., But then they floored her. They informed her she would have to take them to THEIR vet and get them fixed first. Well she told them that the babies were only 8 weeks old, way too young to be Spayed/Nuetered. And they said that they knew that they were 8 weeks old, and that they do it that young now, they would even Declaw them (and offered to get the two fixed that we were keeping at their cost). This concerned her, but what concerned her more, was that they CHANGED Veternarians.
The reason they gave was:
When she got home she started doing some Research. She checked the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Website they said the same thing!!! at least though they added that they must at least weigh 2 lb's. *our babies weren't even two pounds yet..since they weren't eating properly (neither was mom) for the first 4-5 weeks of their lives living in the wilds of our backyard till we found them* She was shocked. To circumvent the problem of being responsible pet owners were these people really putting the kittens at risk? She took the next step. She telephoned several Vet's in the area. They all said "It's being done, BUT THEY WOULDN'T DO IT!"
She is furious.. but what is one person and one angry kitty to do? So we discussed it and decided that the only thing we could do is make the public aware. And maybe if enough people contacted them at the email address on their website this practice might be stopped.
